It seems that the Covid Pandemic 19, along with innovations in the way of doing business due to movement restriction, has radically changed the approach of companies in the Capital to market demands. While traditionally, the number of new businesses in Tirana year after year was dominated by retail units, the trend was reversed during 2020. Over the past year conditioned by the Pandemic, the number of new businesses is dominated entirely by service units. While in the first two months of 2021, utility units have not only exceeded the number of retail stores, but turn out to almost double them.
According to official data of the Municipality of Tirana, during the first two quarters of 2021, 2,034 new entities were opened with service unit activity. While the number of new retail entities is almost half, 557 in the first quarter and 605 in the second, a total of 1,163. To recall the strong change in the trend, it is enough to refer to the figures of new businesses for 2016, in the first quarter of which there were 2,389 retail units, while the number of service units was 1,296. The gap has continued to narrow, while since the start of 2020, service units have begun to outnumber retail stores.
Significant increase has marked during 2021 the number of entities in the activity of free professions. From about 60-70 new entities registered every year in this category, during the first two quarters of 2021 we have respectively 157 and 156 new entities. The upward trend, albeit at a more moderate pace over the last two years, has been recorded by the wholesale companies.
