One morning in early 1992, when the most active prosecutor in Milan’s Pool Mani Pulite, Antionio Di Pietro, launched a major anti-corruption operation in Italian politics, an important phone call came from Rome.
It was Giovani Falcone, the newly appointed Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Justice, who asked his colleague who wished to have a good meal at one of the best restaurants in the northern Italian capital.
Di Pietro booked his favorite trattoria, where at the calculated hour there would be no other client, as the owner, a friend of the prosecutor, had written at the gate that he would do disinfection.
Falcone, who followed with great interest and joy the investigations of his colleagues, advised Di Pietro not to leak news on investigations like soap operas as they would severely damage the investigations.
In Palermo, in the case of the grand trial against the dome of the Cosa Nostra, Falcone and Borselino were locked in the Carabinieri barracks in the Sicilian capital and for over a month did not speak to anyone until they had prepared the court papers, so there was no leak.
But unfortunately, in the case of Mani Pulite, because it was an open way of investigation, and of course there were “tricks”, but also the skills of reporters, there were many leaks for the investigation, which brought big problems. Two of the country’s biggest businessmen, who were arrested on suspicion of bribery against politics, killed themselves.
In Colombia, when the US DEA nucleus arrested the head of the Cali cartel, some media paid by drug traffickers revealed the name of the country’s chief police officer that he had received money from Cali’s godparents.
This severely damaged the investigation, and after the success with the head of the Medellin cartel, Pablo Escobar, and the leaders of Cali, there were no more massive operations against drug trafficking.
These days, during two important operations of SPAK, there is a telenovelation of investigations, using or creating a different fable according to interests.
The “digital citizen”, declared Non Grata by the US State Department, has even been reactivated. who, according to the “Babale” Scheme, is trying to produce fables on the price of police hats, even setting prices as high as “chicken chicken”. Exactly this way of using, or playing with the investigation, can be very harmful, and even more likely to disrupt the real investigation. Not in vain, in the “Babale” case, a telephone conversation of non-existent characters was fabricated by actors paid by the PD headquarters, to then simulate a political scandal.
The Prosecution rightly launched an investigation into this case. What happened? The protagonists of “Babale show” started crumbling. Babalja fled to Kosovo, and then to Belgium, where she was granted asylum. The Babal MP, even though he was convicted, took the mandate once again as a reward and is the most spoiled of the panels, which all have a friend. The third character has agreed to cooperate with justice. Others? They are still today part of the “PD Paramilitaries”, ready for any next operation… / TemA
