It has been said over and over again during the last election campaign that the winning side of the election would leave the losers in a quagmire of crisis and dilemmas that would be difficult to resolve. If Rama lost, the issue of the successor, but also the management of a slide in the opposition after eight years of rule, would be hot potatoes in the hands of the Socialists. If Basha and Kryemadhi lost, the scenario would be even worse, as the opposition would archive the third fatal defeat in a row in the parliamentary elections.
The second scenario happened. Which seems to be appearing even heavier and more complex than anticipated. Berisha’s declaration non grata, Ilir Meta’s threat to leave the Assembly, and above all their reaction in the coming weeks, have suddenly made the opposition panorama even darker. Nobody thought inside the DP, for example, that in these hot days after April 25, the Democrats will have to defend not only the re-election of a president who can not win against Rama, but also that they will have to fight also to carry on his back Sali Berisha’s quixotic battle with America.
While Lulzim Basha tries to convince the upset audience of the militants about the massive election theft, while Monika Kryemadhi has left in an unsuspecting direction and Petrit Vasili writes the statuses on Facebook as if they have put the pistol on the head, the real leaders of the opposition , Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta have not wasted any time to make the gray situation of their parties even darker.
We already have two public statements from both the president and the former prime minister about their plans to return to the helm of the parties they founded. A few hours after the closing of the ballot boxes, Ilir Meta announced that in July next year (if he is not fired within this summer), he will return to the SMI. More precisely, at the head of the SMI.
Whereas Berisha, who only a few days ago declared that he has no interest in the race for the presidency that is taking place in the DP, suddenly declared on Thursday night that he does not rule out any option for his future in politics: not even returning to the top party!
Such a black scenario would hardly have been foreseen by Nostradamus in his prophetic quatrains. Sali Berisha at the head of PD and Ilir Meta at the head of LSI! A political tape turned violently behind, an anti-historical form of leadership in its purest form, a flagrant material proof of the immutability and recycling of evil in the Albanian political scene.
As in our media and public debate, the discussion about the form, dimensions and rhythms that the cleansing of the elites must have, their rotation and generally the removal of the old to make room for the new, the two oldest politicians, whose jackets are being torn from the decorations and sheets they have put on their chests, they are suddenly telling the Albanians that they can both return holding hands, at the head of the Albanian opposition.
Let me agree, there is no competition in the SMI. That party is built to be owned by one man. And this is a big problem, in the conditions when the “man” himself has completed his kilometers, like that old car that complains about tires, tires and the engine. Meta has a long way to go in the party, but that is not the problem. Petrit Vasili will vote for Ilir Meta until the end of the day, but will the Albanians vote for him anymore ?! This is the challenge.
In the DP the situation is a little different, although in essence Berisha’s shadow over the Democrats is almost as severe as that of Meta in the SMI. Imagine the four candidates running on Sunday, how they felt when they heard Berisha say that he wants to take advantage of all his “constitutional rights”!
It is easily assumed that Sali Berisha is increasing the pressure on Basha and the party for support, in the conditions of the war with the Americans, more than he is announcing a real return to the top of the DP. But that matters little, because even if it were simply a matter of greater party assistance in the challenge with the US, the Democratic Party’s political bill would still be quite salty.
Berisha and Meta are giving clear signals that they do not intend to untie the hands of the parties they founded, from their past and their personal destiny. A decade and a half after Fatos Nano has really taken the step of leaving and separating from the SP, Berisha and Meta are reluctant to do so with the PD and LSI in 2021. The unclosed rotation seems to be destroying not only the careers of Basha and Kryemadhi, but makes international pressure on the removal of the old elite from the scene even more current and necessary.
