Damien Tarel is a 28-year-old unemployed man, whose name went viral immediately after he dared to slap French President Emmanuel Macron on June 8.
Before investigators, he admitted what he had done, but said he had not previously thought of hitting the president.

“The young man admitted that he acted out of impulsivity and ‘without thinking beforehand’, which came as a result of his dissatisfaction,” said prosecutor Perrin.
Tarel’s gesture to the president provoked numerous reactions. Macron described what happened to him as an isolated incident and said violence and hatred are a threat to democracy.
Tarel was arrested along with a second person after the incident.
