At the joint press conference with Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, Prime Minister Rama emphasized the advancement of 4 freedoms in the region.
The head of government considered the EU financial package as the largest in the region, while saying that regional Schengen is a project with tremendous benefits.
“I want to thank all the heads of government present from all the countries of the Western Balkans and in particular to thank the commissioner who immediately expressed his readiness to change his agenda, and to come to this meeting. It is of special importance, we have all come together to push forward a process that does not matter what one or the other calls it, but it does matter to advance the realization of the 4 freedoms of our region. This project is supported by a financial package in the framework of an economic plan and investments from the EU that in terms of the volume of funds available for regional cooperation and radical improvement of road infrastructure, railways, ports, interconnection, energy sector and digitalization is the movement largest historical EU in the direction of the Western Balkans. It was a pleasure because finally the meeting was not virtual, because we have the opportunity to host our friends without coercive measures and I believe that both the Commissioner and the delegation feel good that he removed the masks of Brussels in Tirana. This is one of those moments where we must accept that the EU, the EC has done its part completely, it is up to us to do ours “, said Rama.
“We remain firm in our conviction that the regional Schengen is a strategic project with extraordinary benefits, economic, social but also political and I am glad that the synergy of this vision with the EU is complete. The Berlin Process is the beginning and now we are in the conditions when we are owning the process. I hope that the Berlin Process will pass into the hands of the EU, with the desire and ambition that the July 5 meeting be the last in its current format, and that next year it be done in a format with the presence of the WB countries and the European Commission. The last thing that matters is that we have set in parallel a series of ambitious points to link the internally made project with the very way the EU space works. Which means that if we take steps in the 4 freedoms, the ambition is for these steps to be recognized in the EU, from the point of view of economic activity. Last but not least, we have agreed with Hungary on free movement in the post-pandemic without extra obligations, tests, etc., while today all countries have submitted to the EC and the EU the requirement that the digital green card of the citizen of a country in the region “to be recognized throughout the EU space and even in it we move freely as EU citizens move”, continued the Prime Minister.
