Mustafa Nano has given an interview to MCN, where he comments on the current political situation in the country.
How has the 8 years of Mr. Rama’s government affected the country’s European agenda?
The government is always responsible because we have no one to hold to account for the opening of negotiations. If Rama did not win the elections, he would go down in history because in 8 years of government, the membership procedures stalled. If he falls from power, he will be registered in history as the man who did not register any step in the process of Albania’s membership in the EU. Winning this election was also luck.
30 billion euros will be made available to the Western Balkans by the European Union. Albania has shown in the past that it has not been able to design projects and absorb EU funding compared to countries in the region. Are you optimistic that the opposite will happen this time?
I do not have detailed information about the government’s capacity for such a challenge. 6-7 billion is a big figure and I do not know what projects Albania is able to do, I do not know if they have ready projects. The Serbian government, for example, has big projects ready whenever such figures come. 7 billion want big projects from the government.
How do you comment on the position of Prime Minister Albin Kurti on the Balkan mini-meeting?
We have Kurti’s logical endeavors. Only a few months have passed and it is not enough for him to lack coherence, he is going through a transition situation now because he is part of the establishment in Kosovo. He is contracted and clumsy and I think he is from the trouble of crossing. Rama is right to say. He has been to a meeting and Albin Kurti is integrating into the Balkan establishment and this is good news.
What he applauded 4 years ago by electing him as president, the majority applauded again as the dismissed president. Edi Rama has signed several agreements with Ilir Meta, starting from the one on April 1 in Shkodra. What political cost have the agreements of these two characters created for the country?
The biggest cost has been created by the disputes and I have made it wise not to judge the disputes. When negotiations take place they should be welcome. The agreement between Nano and Berisha was no different from what is happening today. We have a political scene where everyone is busy with each other. With the dismissal of Meta we have a cooperation of the majority and the internationals. After the dismissal, the Americans can blackmail Meta. If there are punishments from our justice system they will take the other side otherwise the credibility will be shaken. They have to strike in the other direction because they have been in power for 8 years.
I believe you are familiar with the executive order of US President Joe Biden to include Albania in countries where officials and former officials who have influenced the destabilization of Balkan democracies will face sanctions. Who do you think deserves to be on this list?
I believe that this list will include some people who have played a role in the Balkans, I mean Berisha Djukanovic who has made the day white and black and has a dominant role. I believe that the list excludes those in power like Rama or Vucic, we will have them for a long time. Maybe Rama, Vucic or Zaev will have a democratic-style escape. The list will include those who have imposed a style of governing to reap personal benefits.
