The European Union has expressed optimism on the eve of Joe Biden’s trip to Europe. “America is back,” said European Council President Charles Michel, using Biden’s motto after former President Donald Trump ousted Washington from several multilateral institutions and at one point threatened to leave NATO.
“This means that we again have a very strong partner to promote the multilateral approach, a big change with the Trump administration,” Michel told a group of journalists in Brussels.
Michel and European Union chief executive Ursula von der Leyen will meet with Biden on June 15. This will follow a G7 summit in Britain and a meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels on 14 June.
